Officer Safety and Wellness

Greg Miraglia talks about the importance of adopting officer safety and wellness best practices when it comes to LGBTQIA+ wellness.

Law enforcement departments and organizations across the country are expanding their health and wellness practices every year to discover ways to improve the lives of officers. LGBTQIA+ wellness is an unexplored challenge for many departments, especially those without policies already put into place. However, external organizations like Gay Officer's Action League (GOAL) help fill the gaps for police departments by providing support across the country and in specific regions such as New York City and central Florida. Some departments have only just begun their wellness departments or programs, but there are many support networks for LGBTQIA+ within law enforcement that are willing to help. The San Jose (CA) Police Department, for example, has a Police Chief LGTBQ Advisory Board comprised of LGBTQ members of the community and employees within SJPD to raise issues to the police chief including police policies and responses.  This exhibit provides a comprehensive list of LGBTQIA+ organizations for individuals and law enforcement, found here.
ADVICE FOR LGBTQIA+ Law enforcement
All law enforcement professionals require support throughout their careers. LGBTQIA+ officers may find it even harder to locate support and trust when finding that support requires individuals to be vulnerable about what they're feeling and why they need help. Law enforcement professionals across the country need to be able to lean on each other and provide advice and guidance in all facets of the profession. Our exhibit participants share some of their own advice for others in the law enforcement profession.
Greg Miraglia shares his thoughts on the drastic shift of representation in
law enforcement and what that means for the future.
